It is a pleasure to invite you to the 11th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky to the conference center unter.Bau in the Museum am Schölerberg in Osnabrück, Germany.
Osnabrück is an old Hanse city with charming ancient houses around the city hall.
The Museum am Schölerberg is a natural sciences museum with a stong impact on ecological themes, mainly soil.
Within the museum you find a modern planetarium with conventional and digital projection technique.
The conference location unter.Bau with modern presentation facilities is located within the museum.
The Symposium will deal with the issues of light pollution, its causes, its negative effects and possible remedies.
Some of the issues will be:
- measuring methods of light pollution
- quality of dark sky parks
- efficient dark sky friendly lighting
- environmental impact (e.g. on insects, humans) of modern light sources (e.g. LEDs)
In Germany some important projects are under way:
We hope to have some presentations with first research results from these projects.
Call for Papers
Proposals for talks about these themes can be submitted till Aug. 31st 2011 to email@example.com.
These should contain:
Title, authors/speaker with email, abstract, proposed time (10-25 minutes)

There will be space for exhibitions e.g. from firms or environmental organisations. Please contact me (address below)!
We plan an excursion to the possibly oldest astronomical observatories, the 5000 years old megalithic tombs, and the modern public astronomical observatory of the astronomical association.
Next airport is Münster/Osnabrück FMO with mainly national flights but also some international connections (e.g. London-Stansted, Vienna with AirBerlin)
There is a public bus service (line X150) connecting to Osnabrück and which operates when flight leave or arrive. Travel time is about 40 minutes, one way costs 9,- EUR.
Airports with more low cost carriers are about 90 minutes away:

Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof is the main station. IC-trains on the North-South connection (Cologne/Düsseldorf/Essen - Bremen/Hamburg) stop about every hour. At Osnabrück the North-South highway (Hamburg-Dortmund) A1 and the East-West highway (Hannover-Amsterdam) A30 cross.
The conference location is close to exit 18 (Osnabrück-Nahne) on A30, go direction center, then go right at the first traffic sign. Easiest is to follow the signs to the "ZOO", then you get to the parking (Klaus-Strick-Weg 10)! Museum and Zoo are in the same building.
If you come with your own car to Germany you need an environmental badge for entering many cities. The museum is outside the environmental zone of Osnabrück, but if your hotel is inside, you need the badge. More information (in different languages) and ordering possibility: www.umwelt-plakette.de.
